Belmopan. March 27, 2019. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development and Immigration advises the public that it is extending the period for submissions relating to the use of gillnets in Belize’s waters to April 26th, 2019.
The purpose of this information-gathering exercise is to obtain wide stakeholder views and input pertaining to current gillnet usage, which will inform the consideration of socio-economic and environmental impacts in relation to fisher folk, the fisheries resources, and marine ecosystems. The information obtained through this form will be compiled and utilized by the Gillnet Taskforce, with the aid of an independent consultant, to supplement the execution of an in-depth assessment of the benefits, risks, threats and impacts of gillnets. The findings will be relayed back to stakeholders through consultations once analyses have been completed. The information will aid in making sound and informed recommendations as to the future of gillnet use in Belize.
