Statement by Belize on Illegal Embargo on Cuba

Belmopan. July 20, 2021. 2:35 p.m.

As repeatedly confirmed by overwhelming votes at the United Nations, the embargo imposed on the people of Cuba by the United States of America is a gross violation of international law.

The economic and trade sanctions unilaterally and illegally imposed by the United States of America have resulted in untold suffering of the Cuban people. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been exacerbated by the impacts of the sanctions. This is immoral and inhumane.

The Government of Belize calls for the immediate lifting of the embargo so the people of Cuba can live in peace and dignity and pursue their development on their own terms without interference.
