Registration Ceremony Held for Bomba United Farmers’ Co-operative Society Limited

Belmopan. October 29, 2021. 4:55 p.m.

The Department of Co-operatives, responsible for the registration and regulation of co-operatives, today held a registration ceremony for Bomba United Farmers’ Co-operative Society Limited. This new co-operative has transitioned from a self-regulated farmers’ ad hoc group to a formal enterprise under the oversight of the department. This gives it access to auditing, conflict resolution services, and entrepreneurial development programs, among others.

The co-operative consists of 21 members: 13 men and eight women. It operates from Bomba Village, Belize District and engages in vegetable and fruit production including onion, bell pepper, tomato, lettuce, watermelon, cantaloupe, milk, and cheese.

During the ceremony, remarks were made by Mr. Gareth Murillo, registrar of co-operatives; Mr. Leonel Requena, national coordinator, Small Grants Program, Global Environment Facility, UNDP; and Mr. Reynaldo Orellana, chairman of the co-operative. Present were farmers of the co-operative, personnel from the office of the area representative, members of sister co-operatives, and staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise.
