Prime Minister Names New EU Ambassador

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño has nominated Dr. Gianni Avila as the new Belize Ambassador to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, which is also accredited to the World Trade Organization based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr. Avila previously served as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Belize to the United Nations in New York as well as a trade economist in the Ministry of Trade. Most recently, Dr. Avila was a part of the legal team that advanced Belize’s first legal case before the Caribbean Court of Justice (Original Jurisdiction). She has worked as a law lecturer and a legal advisor on International Trade Law matters.

Dr. Avila was awarded a doctorate in International Economic Law (PhD) from Maastricht University in The Netherlands. Her dissertation focused on the legalities of trade creation within the Caribbean Community under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.

Dr. Avila also holds a Master’s degree in International Law and Economics from the World Trade Institute in Berne, Switzerland; a Bachelor of Law degree (LLB) from BBP Law School in London, UK; and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in International Studies from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida.

She is married and has two sons.
