Belmopan. March 5, 2025.
Today, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) officially opened its new Emergency Office in the City of Belmopan, marking a significant milestone in enhancing disaster response and preparedness efforts in the region. This facility will serve as the Belmopan Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), ensuring a coordinated and effective emergency response for the nation’s capital and surrounding communities.
In times of disaster, the EOC will be manned by a committee comprising the area representative, the mayor, two district coordinators, and 13 committee members from various government ministries. This strategic composition ensures a multi-sectoral approach to disaster risk management, reinforcing collaboration and efficiency in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
Beyond its immediate function as an operations hub during emergencies, the facility is designed to have a lasting impact. In the long term, the building will also serve as a training and research centre, supporting capacity-building initiatives and fostering the development of best practices in disaster risk management.
“The opening of this facility underscores our commitment to ensuring that Belmopan and its surrounding areas have a well-equipped and coordinated emergency response system,” said Mr. Daniel Mendez, National Emergency Coordinator, NEMO. He further expressed, “This is not just about responding to disasters; it is about strengthening our resilience through continuous training, research, and preparedness.”
NEMO extends its gratitude to all partners and stakeholders who have contributed to the realization of this initiative. The organization remains dedicated to safeguarding lives, property, and communities through proactive disaster risk reduction measures.
