On September 6, 2021, Hon. Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics, visited La Gracia Village, Cayo District, to oversee the upgrading of a previously installed 24kW Smart Solar Hybrid System.
Through a continued partnership with The cdw Foundation, ZENNA and local installers Solar Energy Solutions Belize, the lead-acid gel batteries are being replaced by state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries that have a lifespan of 30 years or 8,000 cycles. The upgrade is necessary to ensure the continuous provision of electricity and the sustained operation of the facility, which currently provides 24/7 power to over 45 households.
The lessons learned at the La Gracia facility have been instrumental to the development of the ministry’s Rural Electrification Program. Under the project, the ministry is currently conducting the latest installation at Indian Creek, which will be commissioned in the coming weeks.
