Belmopan, January 9, 2025.
The Ministry of Economic Development announces the inauguration of the newly completed Corozal Free Zone Access Road, a transformative infrastructure project that enhances economic opportunities, connectivity, and progress for the Corozal District and the nation as a whole.
The newly constructed 1.6-kilometer access road represents a critical investment under the Plan Belize Medium Term Development Strategy, aligning with Pillar #6: Economic Transformation and Growth. At the inauguration, Prime Minister John Briceño emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “This road is not just about infrastructure—it is about transformation. It symbolizes our commitment to creating opportunities that change lives, investing in infrastructure that fuels growth, and building a Belize where no one is left behind.”
Funding and Collaboration
The success of the project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of multiple stakeholders:
- Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI): Provided grant funding of 1.9 million Belize dollars.
- Government of Belize: Contributed 1 million Belize dollars.
- Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT): Supported with 200,000 Belize dollars, ensuring sustainability.
- Corozal Free Zone: Invested 150,000 Belize dollars.
The project broke ground in January 2024, and construction was completed in less than a year – a testament to efficient planning and execution. The road improves access to the Corozal Free Zone, facilitates smoother transportation for goods and services, bolsters trade, and attracts investment to the area.
The Ministry of Economic Development extends its gratitude to stakeholders, local residents, and members of the media who joined in celebrating this milestone achievement. Their presence underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing Belize’s economic and infrastructural growth.
