Inauguration of Solar Photovoltaic Project at Corazon Creek, Toledo District

Belmopan, November 13, 2024.

The remote, but vibrant, community of Corazon Creek in the Toledo District has entered the era of renewable energy, with the launch of the Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project. This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a successful collaboration between Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), CDW Stiftung, and the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance (MPUELE).

The inauguration ceremony, held at the project site in Corazon Creek, marked a major milestone for the region, as officials, community members, and stakeholders gathered to celebrate the successful implementation of this transformative energy project.

Mr. Jose Urbina, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry, spoke on behalf of the Minister, Hon. Michel Chebat. Urbina highlighted the Ministry’s enthusiasm for this dynamic project, underscoring its potential to foster social and economic development in the Toledo District. He emphasized the growing importance of solar PV technology in the energy sector, highlighting its potential to provide cleaner, more affordable electricity to rural and remote areas of Belize that have historically been excluded from the national grid, thereby empowering communities and opening doors to improved education, businesses, and healthcare.

Dr. the Hon. Osmond Martinez, Minister of State for Foreign Trade in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, was also present at the ceremony. He expressed his excitement and gratitude for the positive impact this solar project will have on the people of Toledo.

The Corazon Creek Solar PV Project is a testament to the Government’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development. The people of Toledo stand to benefit significantly from this project, gaining access to an affordable and eco-friendly energy source. It addresses present needs, represents an investment in the future, and offers the promise of energy equity, bridging the gap between urban and rural communities. The Corazon Creek Solar PV Project is part of a wider initiative by the Government of Belize to diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce its carbon footprint, and expand access to reliable electricity in underserved areas. The solar system will generate clean power to meet the community’s needs while reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

This successful collaboration between local communities, government officials, and stakeholders has paved the way for the Corazon Creek Solar PV Project to provide a foundation for future initiatives in renewable energy. To commemorate this achievement, a plaque was unveiled on site.
