Today, the Government of Belize and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) hosted an achievement and handing over ceremony for the Belize Motor Vehicle Licensing and Registration System (BMVRLS). In 2017, both countries designed the project for an integrated and national transport system for the Department of Transport.
The BMVRLS project aims to improve the management of the entire transport sector with the use of information and technology. The digital transformation of the Department of Transport includes automating functions and integrating with key entities such as the Police Department, Customs and Excise Department, and Magistrates Court, into the system. This integration will strengthen the government’s ability to investigate vehicle theft, vehicle violation, tax evasion and traffic accidents.
Representatives of the E-Governance and Digitalization Unit, under the Ministry of Youth, Sports and E-Governance, attended the ceremony, which underscores both countries’ shared vision of promoting digital economy.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Kevin Bernard, Minister of E-Governance, stated, “The Ministry of Youth, Sports & E-Governance, through the E-Governance and Digitalization Unit is committed to support the Belize Motor and Vehicle Licensing and Registration System project and the Department of Transport. This project highlights the opportunities that can be achieved through the digital realm.” The minister also highlighted the improvement of collaboration in data sharing and revenue collection while increasing efficiency of services to citizens. He expressed his ministry’s commitment to continuing its support of government entities in their journey towards digital transformation.
In attendance at the ceremony were Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño; His Excellency David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan); Hon. Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics; His Worship Ladrick Sheppard, Mayor of Orange Walk Town; Mr. Jose Urbina, CEO in the Ministry of Youth, Sports, & E-Governance; and Ms. Dian Vasquez, chief transport officer.
