Belmopan, April 8, 2024.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, through the Department of Co-operatives, held a registration ceremony for the Placencia Taxi Co-operative Society Limited on April 6. This new co-operative transitioned from a vision by a group of diligent taxi operators to a formal enterprise under the oversight of the department. This co-operative must now adhere to oversight and reporting requirements. The group will have access to auditing and conflict resolution services, and entrepreneurial development programs, among others.
The new co-operative, whose members have been working together since 2021, is engaged in providing taxi services along the Placencia Peninsula in the Stann Creek District. It has 20 members ─ 17 men and three women ─ who are all residents of Placencia and Seine Bight villages.
Hon. Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport, Youth, and Sports and Area Representative for Stann Creek West delivered the keynote address. Remarks were also made by Mr. Charles Leslie, Chair of the Co-operative; Mr. Warren Garbutt, Chairman of the Placencia Village Council; Mr. Peter Williams, Deputy Chief Transport Officer; and Mr. Gareth Murillo, Registrar of Co-operatives. Also present were the members of the co-operative and other interested stakeholders of the community.
The Department of Co-operatives is responsible for the registration and regulation of co-operatives.
