Belize City, July 4, 2024.
This morning, Cabinet convened to receive a detailed briefing on Hurricane Beryl and our nation’s preparedness efforts from Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon and National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez.
Hurricane Beryl is anticipated to impact the Yucatan Peninsula late tonight through early tomorrow, bypassing direct landfall in Belize. However, northern regions of our country are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, potentially leading to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Based on guidance from the National Meteorological Service and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), Prime Minister Briceño has declared a Tropical Storm Watch from Belize City to Corozal, encompassing Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. This watch will remain in effect until further notice pending the storm’s progression.
Cabinet is assured by NEMO’s diligent implementation of all preparedness protocols, ensuring our nation is equipped to respond effectively to the storm’s proximity. National and district emergency committees in the affected areas have activated their response plans and stand ready to assist as needed.
In light of this development, Cabinet urges all Belizeans to remain vigilant and heed advisories issued by NEMO and updates from the National Meteorological Service. Together, we remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens and residents.
Additionally, our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors in Mexico and throughout the Caribbean, where Hurricane Beryl has impacted communities. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters across the region during this challenging time.
