Cabinet Brief

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, met on 25th
June 2024.

● Cabinet gave its approval for a resolution to be introduced in the
National Assembly for the declaration of a State of Emergency in
certain parts of Belize City and the Cayo District.

● Cabinet approved a request by the Ministry of Civil Aviation to enter
into an Air Services Agreement with the Republic of Panama to
facilitate greater market access and to promote economic growth as
well as to facilitate and regulate air transport between Belize and the
Republic of Panama.

● In keeping with its #PlanBelize Agenda, specifically in line with the
National Identification Roadmap, Cabinet endorsed the National
Biometrics Strategy which will serve as a guiding framework for the
effective and ethical use of biometrics. This will enable us to develop
a robust, safe, and trusted National ID System.

● Cabinet gave its approval for the establishment of a Seasonal Migrant
Workers Program for the promotion of ethical recruitment and
enhanced accountability and efficacy to improve labour migration
processes and employment outcomes for migrant workers and other
stakeholders in the areas of agriculture and construction.

● Cabinet gave its support for legislation to be introduced in the
National Assembly for Belize to accede to the Hague Conference on
Private International Law, which is an intergovernmental organization
that supports the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of
the Child by offering legal mechanisms and protocol for enforcing the
human rights of children. In addition, Cabinet also gave its approval
for the ratification of the Convention on the Protection of Children and
the Recovery of Child Support and other forms of Family
Maintenance. This will allow for Belize to tap into a legally
harmonized framework that supports international cooperation on
matters involving children’s rights.

● Cabinet gave its support for legislation to be introduced in the
National Assembly for Belize to accede to the InterAmerican
Convention on Older Persons and to develop legislation to give effect
to the rights and freedoms provided for in the Convention.

● Finally, Cabinet encourages all Belizeans to stay alert during the
Hurricane Season.
