Belmopan. July 17, 2019. On July 16th, 2019, the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), through its EXPORTBelize technical unit, signed a two-year extension of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) that secures collaboration between the organizations and with other partners on the Seaweed Working Group.
Responsibilities under the MOC that was in force throughout 2016-2018, included Seaweed trainings for several fishing cooperatives, including a training specifically for women, and engaged in several initiatives that foster the development of the Seaweed Mariculture Industry in Belize. The sustainable production of seaweed through these programs, has directly impacted the livelihoods of coastal communities while restoring ecosystem health.
The new MOC seeks to reinforce these initiatives and encourage the development of new programs and activities for the industry that will result in a high-quality product for both the domestic and international markets.
The MOC was signed by Dr. Leroy Almendarez, Executive Director of BELTRAIDE, and the Belize Country Representative for TNC, Mr. Alejandro Martinez.
