Today, Belize joins in commemorating the forty-ninth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba, and the nineteenth anniversary of CARICOM-Cuba Day. This is a historic achievement celebrated by Belize, CARICOM, and Cuba.
Since 1972, affairs between CARICOM and Cuba have grown tremendously on the basis of friendly relations, mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity. The close partnership between CARICOM countries and Cuba is an enduring model of what South-South cooperation can accomplish.
Cuba’s characteristic humanitarian ethos manifested itself yet again in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Belize is especially grateful for Cuba’s early deployment of its Henry Reeve Brigade, which bolstered the public health response to the pandemic in Belize and many CARICOM member states.
Belize reiterates its call for the immediate end of the unilateral and illegal economic and financial embargo imposed on Cuba, which continues to have a devastating impact on the country. Cuba’s indomitable spirit, fierce independence, and long-standing support for the welfare of mankind are widely admired and respected.
The Government of Belize reaffirms its commitment to further strengthen and enhance the close ties of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity with Cuba and extends its best wishes to the Government and people of Cuba.
