Cabinet Brief

Belmopan. 28th October 2021. 4:40 p.m.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, met in regular session on 27th October 2021.

  • Cabinet approved a draft Public Private Partnership (PPP) policy and the creation of a PPP Unit to mobilize private sector capital that support large-scale investment in infrastructure and other development projects that align with government’s policy priorities for public benefit.

  • Cabinet expressed concern about the rising cost of fuel and, in that regard, agreed to a team to look at possible mitigation measures.

  • Cabinet gave the approval for the Ministry of Economic Development (MED), as the National Designated Authority, to seek accreditation to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The MED will be seeking accreditation to access up to US$50 million for programmes and projects. This will enable the Government of Belize to continue transitioning the country’s economy from traditional to more modern along a low-emission, climate-resilient pathway towards true sustainable development.

  • Cabinet was updated on the status of vaccinations and the number of vaccines available in Belize. As of 27th October 2021, 205,502 persons or 47.7 percent had received at least one dose of the vaccine and 177,455 or 41.2 percent have been fully vaccinated.

  •    Effective immediately, Cabinet approved booster shots for all healthcare workers, persons 60 years and older, and for persons with comorbidities.

  • Finally, Cabinet strongly urges the public to wear masks, maintain physical distance, wash hands regularly, and for those not fully vaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Vaccines save lives.
