Belize Exports Cattle to Mexico

Belmopan. October 14, 2021. 5:00 p.m.

A cattle export activity was held today through a collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise and the Belize Livestock Producers Association.

At an approximate value of BZ$150,000, 166 head of cattle were loaded at Blue Creek, Orange Walk District, for transportation to Michoacán, Mexico. The buyer is SuKarne, a Mexican multinational corporation based in Culiacán, Mexico, that operates in the food protein industry. It is part of a family of companies under Grupo SuKarne and has thus far bought 1,642 live animals from Belizean farmers. The animals are taken to Michoacán for fattening and their meat is distributed to other parts of Mexico and abroad, including Canada.

Cattle exports to Mexico have been valued at approximately BZ$1.5 million since last year and the prospects for export continue to improve as Belize and Mexico continue exploring coordination of their systems of phytosanitary control and expansion of partial scope agreements to enhance trade between the two countries.
