In April of 2019, the Governments of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) signed an agreement for a project entitled Belize Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention (BURDP). Since then the project has been well underway.
The first phase of project implementation commenced in October 2019. Firstly, with the installation of water regime monitoring stations that will aid in the development of a flood early warning system, both in San Ignacio and Bullet Tree areas of the Cayo District; and secondly, with numerous interdepartmental training courses that were offered both in-country and abroad.
Presently, the BURDP project is in its second phase of implementation. This entails improving structural measures that will significantly break through bottlenecks, change flow conditions, improve cross-sections, and enhance flood discharge capacity in San Ignacio and Bullet Tree. A total of 523 meters of drains and a culvert will be constructed in this second phase of implementation. Together these structural measures will be able to alleviate choke points, redirect flood waters and prevent flooding in the areas.
Today, the Minister with responsibility for Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development, Dr. Hon. Omar Figueroa, met with the contractors to review the construction plan. The construction of drains and culvert is expected to be completed by November 2020.
The Belize Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention Project is currently being executed by the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Taiwan Technical Mission in Belize.
