Belmopan. February 11, 2019. The Ministry of National Security’s second annual Ride to the Border took place in the Toledo District on Saturday, February 9, 2019.
The ride is an event that the Ministry initiated in December 2016 in order to increase the awareness of the public on the mission and tasks of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) in the Southern Area of Responsibility. The ride to the border is also taken as an opportunity to build comradery and team spirit amongst members of the Belize Defence Force, Belize Coast Guard (BCG), and the Police Department and to promote friendly interaction with the communities in that area.
This year’s ride started at 6:30 a.m. from the Punta Gorda Town Main Square and proceeded through the beautiful but challenging route to the Jalacte/Tree Tops Observation post on the Belize-Guatemala border. The participants received an orientation and familiarization brief from the Commander of the Observation Post and then headed back to conclude the ride at Fairweather Camp for a total of 67 miles.
There were 31 participants in the ride, mostly from the BDF and BCG and a few cyclists from the Digicel team.
