H.E. Lin Chia-Lung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Visits Belize

Belmopan, October 30, 2024. 

H.E. Lin Chia-Lung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), arrived in Belize yesterday, October 29, 2024, and met with Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Education, Culture, Science, and Technology of Belize.

During their meeting, the Ministers highlighted the 35th Anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations and the adoption of a Motion by the National Assembly of Belize to celebrate the occasion.

Both Ministers reiterated their commitment to deepening and broadening the close and friendly ties between Taiwan and Belize. They underlined their intention to work together on joint initiatives to reduce poverty, provide economic opportunities, and improve the well-being of the people of both countries.

Minister Fonseca thanked Minister Lin for the support from the government of Taiwan in the construction of a hospital in San Pedro that will provide health services to the local community and tourists visiting the island.

In response to a previous request by Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño, Minister Lin announced that the Government of Taiwan would provide financial support to assist with the reconstruction of the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.

The ministers placed these initiatives in the context of the universal aim to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and emphasized the contributions that Taiwan could make to the international community. Minister Fonseca pledged to continue to advocate for Taiwan’s participation in the work of the UN and its agencies.

H.E. Lin Chia-Lung thanked the Government of Belize for its unwavering support of Taiwan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to self-determination. He also expressed gratitude to the Belizean Government for continuing to call on China to respect the will of the Taiwanese people.

Both Ministers expressed their commitment to continue to explore mechanisms to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the best interest of the people of Taiwan and Belize.
