Belize Attends Caribbean Youth Summit in Jamaica

Belmopan, November 27, 2023.

Belize participated in the Caribbean Youth Summit (CYS) in Jamaica from November 22 to 25. The delegation included Ms. Indira Loague, Deputy Director of Youth Services; Ms. Marissa Cervantes, Belize’s Caricom Youth Ambassador; and Ms. Dominga Cucul, Indigenous Youth Representative (Maya Culture).

The inaugural summit was hosted under the theme, “Securing Our Future: Youth Co-Creating a Peaceful and Sustainable Caribbean Community Against GBV.”

Participants gained knowledge of strategies for becoming more involved in fighting and reducing violence in their countries, with a focus on mental, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based and community violence.

The sessions also focused on capacity building, empowering attendees to participate in decision-making processes. It also provided opportunities for sharing ideas on the prevention of gender-based violence, while receiving support to improve their own mental and social well-being to address any challenges correlated to violence.

The Caribbean Youth Summit is in line with sustainable development goal #5, which aims to achieve gender equality by ending all forms of discrimination, violence, and harmful practices against women and girls.
